Rainer Maria Rilke

Born René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke in Prague on 4 December 1875, Rainer Maria Rilke was an Austrian poet who also published a novel and a body of correspondence. Alongside Sufi Mystic poet Rumi and The Prophet author Kahlil Gibran, Rilke is one of the most popular poets in the United States.

From poets.org:

“At the time of his death his work was intensely admired by many leading European artists, but was almost unknown to the general reading public. His reputation has grown steadily since his death, and he has come to be universally regarded as a master of verse.”

Rilke died on December 29, 1926 in the Valmont Sanatorium in Switzerland shortly after being diagnosed with leukemia.
