Omar Khayyam was born on May 18, 1048, in Neyshābūr (also known as Nīshāpūr), Khorāsān (now Iran). Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer and poet, and was renowned for his scientific achievements. He is chiefly known to English-speaking readers through the translation of a collection of his quatrains in The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, first published in 1859, by the English writer Edward FitzGerald.

Omar Khayyam died in 1131 and is buried in the Khayyam Garden at the mausoleum of Imamzadeh Mahruq in Nishapur.
