Born in 1440 at Lahartara near Kashi which is present-day Varanasi, Kabir was a mystic poet who wrote a large body of poems and songs and has a modern day following including the Kabir Panth or Path of kabir who number nearly ten million and include Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.

Not much is known of Kabir’s early life. Born to Muslim parents, Kabir became¬† a disciple of Hindu Guru Ramananda. He earned his living as a weaver and remained a pious householder. He also worked to relieve tension between Muslims and Hindus by emphasizing the common ground between them. Kabir denounced the caste system and believed in the equality of all. His teaching was based on encouraging people to find the divine within their own hearts.

Kabir died in 1518, at Maghar near Gorakhpur.
