Ralph Waldo Emerson, the American essayist, lecturer, and poet was born in 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. A mentor and friend of Henry David Thoreau, Emerson would first give his essays as lectures and then revise them for print. Emerson and Thoreau were fellow Transcendentalists. Several of Emerson’s poems were included in Bloom’s The Best Poems of the English Language.
Emerson died on April 27, 1882 and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, Massachusetts.
