Born in 1806, Elizabeth Barrett was a prominent poet of the Victorian era, who married the poet Robert Browning, six years her junior. She met Browning after he wrote to her to tell her how much he loved her poetry. Elizabeth was popular both in England and the United States and much of her work contained social criticism. She died on 29 June 1861 in her husband’s arms from lung disease, having been sickly from the age of 15.
