Hafiz or Hafez of Shiraz is a Persian Sufi Mystic poet. Born in Shiraz, Persia (now Iran) around 1315 C.E , Hafez’ popularity remains huge in Iran, with many Iranians having a copy of his collected works, and they memorise his poems and use them as proverbs and sayings in everyday life.

Many Iranians use Hafez’ Divan as a means of divination (which is not the same as fortune telling). They will hold a question in mind and open the Divan at a page and meditate on the ode they open at and use it as guidance and insight.
